Description
The Fermat Museum: a unique place, a unique experience
Aimed at families and tourists (with a special area for 3-8 year olds), this unique place, one of whose aims is to shake up people’s relationship with mathematics, will offer an enriching experience for everyone. Immersing visitors in the life of a 17th-century family, honouring the memory of Pierre de Fermat and passing on his passion for mathematics to the public, and giving them a different idea of mathematics by offering an innovative space based on scientific and mathematical culture – these are the ambitions that presided over the creation of this space.
There are six stages to the visit:
– A house, a family: a journey through time
– An era, a man: Pierre de Fermat in his time, his work as a magistrate, his library
– A passion: Fermat and mathematics in the 17th century
– Mathematics today: using interactive devices, explore current mathematics in relation to Fermat’s work (optimisation, number theory, probability, etc.).
– The Last Theorem in comics, with an interview with Andrew Wiles produced for the Fermat Museum.
– Discover the Bastide of Beaumont-de-Lomagne from the top of the tower of the Hôtel particulier.
An additional space is dedicated to temporary exhibitions.
The first exhibition, Enter the world of AI, was designed by Fermat Science, the association that manages and runs the museum, in collaboration with the Maison Poincaré and La Maison des Mathématiques et de l’Informatique in Lyon.
